Some who opposed Jesus, not believing Him to be the Saviour if sinners “, called Him a friend of sinners as an insult. In fact it was a lovely compliment of the graciousness of the Lord Jesus. We read about it in Luke chapter 7.

What does it mean that Jesus is a friend of sinners? What kind of friendship is it? What kind of friend is Jesus? Can you say He is your friend?

Matthew chapter 16 records Peter’s confession of Jesus which is an important moment during Jesus’ earthly ministry. Even readers of the gospels who reject Jesus’ words agree on this. This particular passage has caused some confusion over the years but God provides sufficient help for us to understand the message. We are challenged as to whether we have ever really confessed Christ, and if we have, how has it changed our lives?

So often our feelings are determined by our immediate circumstances, so if we have just managed to find a new job or passed an exam we might say that we feel blessed. But come and join us on Sunday morning as we see how the apostle Paul shows how blessed we are, not because of our immediate circumstances, but because of what God has done for us.

What do those terms actually mean? Which, in this description of human beings like us,fits us most accurately? You will notice how Peter contrasts the situation and prospect of the Christian with the situation and prospect of those who do not obey the gospel.

There are important and weighty matters we need to hear. Those truths which present the inflexible holiness of the God who will judge us are often played down or ignored even by those who claim to follow Jesus.

Based on 1 Peter chapter 4 verse 12-17 we take a look at how a true Christian should react to opposition, even persecution. Peter says we should rejoice if we are misrepresented, sidelined, ridiculed, or even harmed or harassed just because we believe on the Lord Jesus and follow Him.

How can we cope? How can we rejoice? What message does our response to suffering opposition or persecution send to those around us? What are the heavenly realities in this kind of suffering as a Christian that encourage us to persevere?

The title of Nathan’s sermon is: “Jesus Cleans the Unclean”. In Matthew 8, a leper approaches Jesus. Jesus should turn him away, but he doesn’t. Instead, he honours the leper’s bold but humble faith and cleanses him of his disease. In this, Jesus sets a pattern that still exists for us today: Jesus is still willing and able to cleanse those who come to him with bold but humble faith.

Genesis 22 is a very well known passage. It is the narrative of Abraham obediently taking his son Isaac in order to offer him as a sacrifice. This testing of Abraham’s faith in this account reveals much of the character of Abraham and there is plenty we can learn from him as we approach this chapter. However, the primary purpose of this chapter is not to show us the character of Abraham, but the character of God. He is revealed in this chapter as Jehovah-Jireh, The Lord who Provides.

To help us understand what it means we will be looking at why we should follow Jesus and not anyone else, what it means to follow Jesus and how do I follow Jesus today.

What is the priority in your life? What is it that you devote most of your time and energy to? In this passage someone makes a request of Jesus that he would intervene in a family dispute so that the complainant would receive the money he believes that he is due. Materialism – the accumulation of possessions and money as the primary goal – is an attitude that was present in Jesus’ day and is still rampant today.

In response Jesus tells this parable to show the folly of living for material welfare that doesn’t last while neglecting to look after your spiritual welfare in eternity.
